The craft

What Is Kalamkari?

Kalamkari — from kalam (pen) and kari (work) — is a centuries-old Indian textile art traditionally built entirely from natural materials: cloth, plant and mineral dyes, and either a hand-carved wooden block or a bamboo pen. In the traditional process, no synthetic pigment touches the fabric at any stage. The result is cloth that carries pattern the way a drawing carries a line — deliberately, by hand, piece by piece.

A process older than the fabric itself

Before a single motif is drawn or printed, the cloth is treated in a mordanting solution — traditionally myrobalan (a dried fruit, also called harade) mixed with substances like buffalo milk — which prepares the fibre to actually hold natural dye rather than let it wash straight out. Only after this step can colour be added at all.

From there, the two Kalamkari traditions diverge. In the pen-drawn Srikalahasti style, an artist sketches directly onto the cloth freehand, using a bamboo pen whose tip is wrapped in fine hair to hold dye like a natural nib. In the block-printed Machilipatnam and Pedana style — the tradition of Pedana, where our pieces come from — hand-carved teak blocks stamp the outline and repeating motifs, with finer detail added by hand afterward.

Colour comes from the earth, not a bottle

In traditional Kalamkari, every colour traces back to a plant or mineral source: indigo for blue, alizarin or madder root for red, iron filings fermented into a solution for black, and turmeric or pomegranate rind for yellow. Each colour is typically added in its own separate dyeing pass, with the cloth washed and sun-dried in between — which is also why the process can take days for a single piece, not minutes.

Why it still matters

Kalamkari survived exactly because it never became fully mechanized. It is still made where it began, in Andhra Pradesh. Every piece in this shop comes from Pedana, and each product page states how it is made.
