The craft

Three ways Kalamkari is made

We sell all three. Each product page states which technique that piece uses.

Pen Kalamkari

Drawn and painted freehand with a bamboo pen (kalam), line by line: the Srikalahasti tradition. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Hand block printing

Carved wooden blocks, each holding part of the design, are pressed onto the cloth by hand like a stamp: the Pedana and Machilipatnam tradition.

Screen printing

Kalamkari designs printed through fine mesh screens, one colour at a time: even, lasting colour at an everyday price.

Traceable by design

Every piece, traced back to Pedana.

We work directly with artisans in Pedana — not through an anonymous supply chain. Every product on this site carries its own product number, and we know exactly where and by whom each one was made, so if you ever have a question about a piece, we can answer it. We think that's a strength worth being upfront about, not something to leave out.
