Buying Kalamkari sarees and dress materials online

Sarees

• Fabric. Cotton sarees are light and breathable for everyday wear and summer. Silk sarees, such as our Nizam Border silk sarees, drape with more sheen for festivals and functions.
• Length. Sarees are usually about 5.5 to 6.4 metres long. Check the length in the product details.
• Blouse piece. The product details say whether a blouse piece is included, so you know whether to buy blouse fabric separately.
• Colours. Some sarees come in several colours (you choose one on the page); others are one of a kind. The subtitle under the name tells you the design.

Dress materials

A dress material is unstitched fabric for a salwar suit or kurta. On Kalamkari House, a cotton dress material has a printed Kalamkari piece and a plain matching piece. The subtitle names both, such as "Pink Mudra Hands with Green": a pink mudra-hands print with a green plain piece.

Raw silk sets pair fabric for a top with a printed dupatta, named by the top's colour and the dupatta's design.

Fabric by the metre

Kalamkari fabric is sold by the metre: the price shown is per metre, and you choose how many metres you want. As a rough guide for stitching:

• a kurta takes about 2 to 2.5 m;
• a blouse about 1 m.

Ask your tailor for your size.

Colours on screen

Printed colours look slightly different in daylight and on different phone screens. If an exact colour matters, message us on WhatsApp before ordering and we'll send a photo of the piece.

Care

Follow the care instructions in each piece's details. Wash cotton separately in cold water with a mild detergent for the first few washes, and dry it in the shade. See how to wash and care for Kalamkari.
